This critical incident allows students to reflect upon the issues leading up to a critical governance decision by the third and fourth generation business owners – should the company’s direction continue to only be determined by the family owners or is the company mature enough to incorporate third-party independent directors into its decision-making processes as well as a non-family member deputy manager? Learners are asked to put themselves in the position of one of the fourth-generation owners in deciding which course of actions needs to be undertaken to address these two issues. Using the decision tree model, students will practice deciding the best next step options.
