River Region Animal League, a not-for-profit organization, has experienced tremendous growth during the period covered in the case. The financial resources tripled, and the number of animals rescued, treated, and placed in permanent homes had increased more than tenfold. The organization has tried to establish uniform animal care and adoption procedures during this period, but much work remains to be done. Marge Lewis, the vice-president and founder of the organization, continues to operate without concern for the procedures. This has led to the current situation in which the not-for-profit corporation may have liability to an adoptive family for damages an animal in its care caused.
