How the Ignatian Pedagogical Paradigm Informed Pandemic Teaching

Ignatian Pedagogy has not merely survived, but thrived over its 400-plus years of history. Its dynamic approach to education, as reflected in the Ignatian Pedagogical Paradigm (IPP), relies on the interplay of the five core elements: Context; Experience; Reflection; Action; and Evaluation. By considering first the Context of the learners, the IPP is particularly suited to adapting to changing times and circumstances, including changes in the learning environment such as those associated with a pandemic. The adaptive nature of the IPP is present in all elements, as the five components interact in an iterative manner. Consequently, changes in the Context of the learning environment should flow through to changes in Experience, Reflection, Action and Evaluation. However, in the field of Accounting, the final element of Evaluation barely has changed over the last 40 years despite clear changes in the Context of the learners – until the pandemic, when the power of the IPP became clear.
