The creation of teaching cases and notes based on social media data (or SMD) has received little attention by case writers. In contrast, researchers are leveraging SMD for empirical studies of online phenomena with greater frequency. With this panel, we seek to stimulate discussion on issues pertinent to this application of social media data. We identify examples of valuable opportunities presented by SMD, as well as reasons for case writers to exercise caution. We are hopeful that this panel will have two results: 1) Ongoing discussion by case writers from varied disciplines, and 2) Creation of a vibrant body of teaching cases, teaching notes, and conceptual works that apply SMD and further explore its potential to contribute to effective teaching.
