Until the 1960s, America's downtown business districts were the unchallenged heart of their communities.  However, during the 1970s and 1980s, downtown business districts faced stiff competition from malls and shopping centers. Both downtown entrepreneurs and business districts faced further challenges during the late 1990s with the rise of the internet and online retailers such as Amazon.  Downtowns in many communities need revitalization.  Many communities seeking to revitalize their downtowns are looking to learn from those that have successfully revitalized their downtown business districts.  Bozeman, Montana, is an example of a community undergoing a successful downtown revitalization effort.
